Housing supply and construction

Suggest changes

How many homes are needed and what it takes to build them.

Housing is more than a building

  • Safe, affordable homes in places people can reach and use. Define whose access improves and what affordability means before choosing a construction target.
  • Connect land-use rules, land availability, financing, construction capacity, utilities, transport, and jobs. Include current residents, new residents, local authorities, and service providers. Track the stock of usable homes and the flows that add, remove, or convert them.
  • Consider water and power capacity, transport access, available labor, financing, maintenance, and the time needed to deliver each part. Distinguish a constraint that can be changed from one that must be respected immediately.

Principles

  • More available homes require usable land, labor, materials, infrastructure, and permission to build.
  • Measure housing policy by homes people can occupy, not announcements or funding commitments alone.
